The Black Spiny-tailed Iguana (Ctenosaura similis) is a robust, fast-moving lizard native to Central America, found in countries like Mexico, Honduras, and Costa Rica. It is named for the distinct spiny scales running along its tail. Adults typically have a gray to black coloration with dark bands, while younger iguanas are often more greenish with faint striping. These iguanas can grow up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) in length and are known for their speed and agility, making them excellent climbers and escape artists. Primarily herbivorous, they also occasionally eat insects and small animals. Black spiny-tailed iguanas thrive in rocky, arid environments and are known for basking in the sun on cliffs or ruins. They are one of the fastest lizards in the world, capable of reaching speeds up to 35 km/h (22 mph).
